The Classic Swing, Position 2: Takeaway
| In the backswing the club is parallel to the ground in the face-on view. |

| As the club moves away from the ball, the head moves slightly within the Head Circle, away from the target. The takeaway is powered by the connection between the upper left arm and left pectoral (chest). As a result, the left shoulder begins to create space away from the Shoulder Line. The golf swing is rotational in nature as evidenced by the right hip and its lack of lateral motion in the takeaway. At no point does the right hip move outside the Hip Line during the backswing. |
Both the hands and clubhead trace the Plane Line during the takeaway. This is a classic position few amateurs achieve as most take the club back well inside or under the Plane Line, requiring compensations later in the swing. The head remains steady inside the Head Circle, while the tush keeps in contact with its line. It is also important to note that the knees remain flexed and the connection between the upper left arm and chest is still intact. |
