The Classic Swing, Position 3: Halfway Back

In the backswing the left arm is parallel to the ground from the face-on view.
Face-On Target Line
In this position a noticeable space should be established between the left shoulder and the Shoulder Line, a smaller space between the right hip and the Hip Line, and an obvious lateral movement of the head away from the target. The correct hinging of the wrists on the proper plane creates a 90 degree angle between the left arm and the clubshaft while the right forearm remains slightly higher than the left. While the head and tush remain steady, it is the angle of the clubshaft that is of critical importance at the Halfway Back position. In the swings of many amateurs an extension of the clubshaft in this position is pointing outside or to the right of the ball in a flatter alignment than the Plane Line. In most professionals, the shaft is pointing inside the ball or more upright than the Plane Line. The correct alignment of the clubshaft in this position makes the transition into an on-plane downswing substantially easier.
